For the English AudienceA line has been crossed - for the first time Tanzania has produced a journalist with international protection status, after fearing his life back home.

Ansbert Ngurumo, a renowned editor of various weeklies in Tanzania, is now in Finland, allegedly being tracked by unknown people.

The editor made his way from Dar es Salaam, the country's business capital to Mwanza, then crossed border to Nairobi, Kenya before he flew to Sweden and now in Finland seeking safety.

Ngurumo who is said to be a critic to President John Magufuli and his administration, last year said he escaped death after being chased by unknown people while returning home from work, at MwanaHalisi weekly newspaper in Dar es Salaam.

Since then, Ngurumo has been living in fear of his life, thus looked for a safe haven.

Speaking to JamiiForums from Finland, Ngurumo said he feels that he is now safe but very much worried over his fellow journalists and media back home.

"Media practitioners in Tanzania are not safe, they are intimidated, assaulted, even killed in line of their duties, and bad enough, they are all silent," he said.

He said under Magufuli administration, all media houses has embraced "over self censorship" to the extent that, no good news is printed.

Several critics including contributors on JamiiForums have been condemning Magufuli’s administration for silencing the media and closure of civic space.
